After a long day of sitting—whether at your desk, driving, or relaxing on the couch—your hips and lower back crave movement and release. Tight hips can contribute to back pain and stiffness, but the good news is you can start finding relief immediately with this simple, foundational pose.
We begin with the first of our three restorative hip stretches that you can do entirely while lying down.
- Lie on Your Back (Supine): Settle down on your yoga mat or a comfortable spot on the floor. Take a moment to feel the support beneath you.
- Wide Feet, Easy Knees: Bring your feet wide—wider than your hips—and let your knees knock together. This is a lovely, neutral position for your lower back to relax and lengthen.
- Cactus Arms : Extend your arms out to the sides, bending your elbows to a 90-degree angle so your palms face up, creating a shape like a cactus. This gently encourages your chest to open and your shoulders to settle back as you look straight up at the ceiling.
Watch along and feel your hips opening and relaxing!
