Massage Therapy Balls for Feeling Better

Patricia Becker using a massage therapy ball for foot massageI use Tune Up Fitness massage balls almost every day, and they are an important part of my own self-care.

In fact, I recently discovered a new and powerful use for them.

For a few weeks, at night, I had been experiencing what I imagined might be restless legs. I thought about what could be causing the involuntary movement and wondered if it might be coming from higher up in my glute area.

So I got out of bed, lay down on the floor, and used my Tune Up balls to massage my glutes.

Then I went back to bed—and voilà! It worked! My leg stopped the involuntary movement.

THANK GOODNESS!

This experience reminds me again how useful these massage therapy balls can be.

Why I Use Them So Often

As a yoga teacher and wellness educator, I spend a lot of time helping people improve mobility, release tension, and feel better in their bodies. I also know how important for me to slow down for my own self care.

Sometimes I use just one ball for a few minutes. Sometimes I use two. And sometimes I use all three.

To be truthful, I often feel best when I use all three.

Yoga Tune Up® Therapy Balls

These smaller balls are especially good for foot massage.

Stand on both balls with one foot, press down, and slowly roll your foot around as much and for as long as feels good.  Then, of course, do the other foot.

You can use a chair or wall for balance as needed or desired.

Massaging your feet this way can have benefits throughout the body. Think of it as your own form of self-foot reflexology.

The ALPHA Ball

This ball is larger and firmer, so I use it when I want to work with larger areas of the body.

I especially like to use it very slowly on my neck and upper shoulder area.

I was elated by the release and relief I experienced the first time I used the ALPHA Ball in a yoga class about 12 years ago. I’ve been using it ever since.

Now I also use it slowly on my hips, glutes, and upper back—wherever and whenever I want a little more pressure.

The Coregeous® Ball

This one is quite different from the other two. It is softer. It is inflatable so you can adjust the amount of air and change the feel of the ball.

I lie belly-down on it and move myself around so the ball generally follows the path of the ascending, transverse, and descending colon.

I find this abdominal massage helpful because it connects digestive system movement, breathing, and body awareness.
