Summer is a time to simplify meals and choose foods that feel light, fresh, and easy to digest. When temperatures rise, the body naturally responds best to foods that support hydration, balance, and steady energy.

Drink in a Way That Supports Digestion

Instead of very cold beverages, choose room temperature water or herbal teas. Sip slowly throughout the day rather than drinking large amounts at once. This supports both hydration and comfort in hot weather.

Pure water remains one of the most balancing choices during summer.

Favor Bitter Greens in Summer

Traditional Five Element theory associates summer with the bitter flavor. Including small amounts of bitter greens can help support balance during hot weather. These greens add freshness and variety to seasonal meals.

Try:

  • Dandelion greens
  • Arugula
  • Chicory
  • Endive
  • Mustard greens
  • Watercress

Keep Meals Light and Simple

Summer is a time to lighten the plate. Focus on foods that are easy to digest and naturally cooling:

  • Quinoa
  • Millet
  • Amaranth
  • Basmati rice
  • Light beans and tofu
  • Seasonal vegetables like cucumbers, lettuce, celery, radishes, and peas

Sea vegetables such as wakame and nori are also beneficial in small amounts.

A Gentle Summer Approach

Aim for meals that feel:

Fresh • Light • Crisp • Colorful

Use gentle cooking methods such as steaming, light sautéing, and short simmering. Eat slowly and enjoy slightly smaller meals.
